Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Resident Coordinator System (RCS) is undergoing reform to enhance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs. The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCOs) support countries in development priorities. This role, within the UN RCO in Cairo, Egypt, contributes to the UN 2.0 shift, focusing on data-driven solutions and innovation.
Job Purpose
The Associate Data Specialist is responsible for developing and delivering data science solutions to improve organizational planning, decision-making, and program implementation. This role designs products that offer situational awareness, insights, and predictive assessments to guide program management. It also identifies opportunities for innovative approaches and evidence-based reasoning for complex organizational issues. The specialist collaborates with internal technical staff and external partners to support data initiatives, build data models for analysis and prediction, and ensure compliance with data governance and security standards. The position aims to leverage data to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of UN development efforts.
Responsibilities
Implement and optimize databases, data collection systems, and analytics strategies for statistical efficiency and quality. Analyze and interpret trends and patterns using statistical methods to identify key features and variables. Acquire, clean, and manage data from various sources, maintaining databases and data systems. Develop reports, dashboards, and visualization tools to effectively communicate findings and support management decision-making. Track and report on the progress of data initiatives. Gather business requirements across departments to identify pain points and support data-driven analysis. Compile data insights and prepare supporting materials for stakeholder communications. Stay updated on emerging trends and best practices in data analytics. Contribute to the design and development of data science products using advanced analytical methods like AI and machine learning. Develop processes to monitor model performance and data accuracy. Assist in building data analytics capacity through training and workshops. Support team members with data verification, routine reporting, and administrative tasks.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in translating business requirements into technical solutions is required. Experience with data manipulation, analysis, data lifecycle management (collection, wrangling, analysis, visualization, deployment, monitoring, reporting), and database management is essential. Proficiency in data storytelling and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, R) and troubleshooting complex data problems is necessary. Experience with data science concepts, statistics, and predictive modeling is desirable.
