Migration and Human Rights Intern
Organizational Context
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland, seeks an intern to support its mandate of promoting and protecting the human rights of people on the move. This role contributes to advancing a human rights-based approach to migration governance within the UN Secretariat.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in human rights and migration. The intern will support the OHCHR in its mission to promote and protect the rights of individuals on the move and integrate a human rights perspective into migration policies. The role involves research, analysis, drafting of documents, and assisting with various processes and events related to migration and human rights, contributing to the overall communication and advocacy efforts of the office. The position offers a valuable opportunity to engage with international human rights mechanisms and contribute to global migration governance discussions.
Responsibilities
The intern will conduct research and analysis on migration and human rights issues, including thematic, regional, and policy developments. Key duties include drafting and summarizing various substantive materials such as reports, briefing notes, background papers, and meeting notes. The intern will also support OHCHR's contributions to migration-related processes, including those involving the Human Rights Council, General Assembly, and the Global Compact for Migration. Responsibilities extend to preparing for and servicing meetings, consultations, and workshops, as well as contributing to communication, advocacy, and outreach activities. Assisting with web content and information management is also part of the role.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to migration and human rights is essential. The role requires strong analytical and drafting skills, along with excellent organizational and coordination abilities to manage a demanding workload and meet deadlines.
