The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of a global reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under empowered UN Resident Coordinators. The Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO) oversees the Resident Coordinator system, recalibrated to support the 2030 Agenda and UN 2.0 initiatives. This Associate Data Specialist role is situated within the UN RCO in Banjul, Gambia.
Job Purpose
The Associate Data Specialist supports the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Banjul, Gambia, by developing and implementing databases, data collection systems, and analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. This role contributes to evidence-based decision-making for the UN Country Team (UNCT) by analyzing trends, developing reports and dashboards, and supporting monitoring and evaluation products for the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. The position also involves collaborating with internal and external counterparts, including national statistical partners, to enhance data capabilities and promote a data-driven culture within the UN system and among partners.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. Identify and analyze trends using statistical methods. Acquire, clean, and maintain databases and data systems. Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, and learning products for the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. Integrate monitoring milestones into data pipelines. Develop reports and dashboards for management decision-making. Assist in UNCT statistical capacity-building and outcome-level analysis. Document methodologies and establish data standards. Co-design digital tools with national partners. Draft reports and correspondence. Monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy. Design and implement process improvements, including automation. Implement solutions for data-related technical problems. Prepare and organize datasets for data scientists. Collaborate with data engineers and scientists to improve data flows and quality. Create basic data visualizations. Conduct data collection, cleaning, and preliminary analysis. Compile data insights and develop supporting materials. Stay updated on data analytics trends and propose applications. Build staff and partner capacity on data analytics through training. Support data preparation, verification, and pattern identification. Contribute to data science product development using advanced analytical methods. Serve as a resource person and mentor on data analytics.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience translating business requirements into technical solutions is required. Experience in data quality assurance and data validation is also required. Experience with data storytelling and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, R) and one year of experience in data analytics are desirable.
