Organizational Context

The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs, operating under the UN Secretariat's Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO). This role is within the UN RCO in Astana, Kazakhstan, reporting to the Head of the RCO. The position supports the UN Country Team's communication strategies and the Resident Coordinator's engagement with external partners.

Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies to enhance awareness, engagement, and support for the UN's work among target audiences. This involves gathering media insights, crafting compelling narratives, and producing various communication materials. The role facilitates interagency communication, media relations, and outreach initiatives to strengthen the UN's collective voice and advance its priorities. It also involves managing digital platforms, creating content for diverse channels, and fostering strategic partnerships to maximize impact and ensure effective communication of key messages and advocacy efforts.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement communication strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement. Monitor traditional, social, and digital media for insights and reputational risks. Draft narratives and messaging for UN work across various platforms. Build relationships with media outlets and develop media lines, including for crisis situations. Plan and coordinate press conferences, briefings, and media events. Create compelling content and produce communications products like press releases, web stories, and infographics. Develop and implement communication campaigns and strategic partnerships. Facilitate outreach and advocacy strategies. Create content for radio and podcasts. Assist in reporting and preparing inputs for governmental bodies. Act as a spokesperson when required. Stay updated on communication trends and technologies. Monitor and analyze communication activities for effectiveness. Contribute to data collection, analysis, and visualization for planning and reporting.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of experience in communications, international relations, or a related field is required. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing communication strategies, knowledge of digital media platforms and monitoring tools, and writing for digital platforms are essential. Experience with data visualization tools and data analytics is desirable.
