Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of the UN Secretariat's Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO), support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs. This role is within the UN RCO in Freetown, Sierra Leone, reporting to the Head of the RCO, and contributes to the UN 2.0 shift focused on data, digital, and innovation.
Job Purpose
The Associate Data Specialist supports the UN Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Freetown, Sierra Leone, by developing and implementing databases, data collection systems, and data analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. This role involves collaborating with internal and external counterparts to enhance data-driven decision-making for development, humanitarian, and peace initiatives. The specialist will contribute to the UN 2.0 agenda by leveraging data, digital tools, and innovation to accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring evidence-based strategies and reporting.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and data analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. Identify and analyze trends and patterns using statistical methods. Acquire, clean, and maintain databases, ensuring data integrity and quality. Develop reports and dashboards to support evidence-based decision-making for management. Document methodologies and establish data practices. Design and implement process improvements, including automation and architecture optimization. Collaborate with data engineers and scientists to enhance data flows and quality. Build capacity among staff and partners in data analytics through training and workshops. Contribute to the development of data science products using advanced analytical methods. Serve as a resource and mentor to promote a data-driven culture within the RCO.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience translating business requirements into technical solutions is required. Experience in data quality assurance and validation is also required. Experience in data analytics, data storytelling, and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, R) is desirable.
