High-Level Strategic Advisor - NBSAP Accelerator Partnership

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development. This role sits within UNEP's Ecosystems Division, specifically the Nature Frameworks Support Unit. The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, established in 2022, supports countries in implementing National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans to achieve global biodiversity goals.
Job Purpose
The High-Level Strategic Advisor will provide senior strategic advice, high-level political engagement, and advocacy to enhance the global visibility, resource mobilization, and partnerships of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership. This role is crucial for strengthening the Partnership's influence among governments, donors, and international organizations, thereby supporting the accelerated implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans. The advisor will contribute to successful preparations for key international events like CBD COP17 and the next phase of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, ultimately advancing the vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. The position aims to elevate the political profile and secure scaled support for NBSAP implementation worldwide.
Responsibilities
Provide high-level strategic advice to the Global Coordination Unit and Co-Chairs on political priorities and engagement strategies for advancing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Prepare for and contribute to ministerial dialogues, Steering Committee meetings, high-level bilateral engagements, and international biodiversity events. Identify emerging political opportunities and advise on strengthening country ownership and commitment to NBSAP implementation. Represent the Partnership in selected high-level meetings and consultations. Offer strategic insights on political economy, stakeholder engagement, and global advocacy. Guide the Global Coordination Unit in preparing for high-level engagements, ensuring coherence in messaging and outcomes. Engage with partners and donors to deepen engagement, expand the partnership, and secure long-term funding for the Accelerator and its matchmaking mechanism. Foster strategic relationships and open political and institutional pathways for scaled support for NBSAP implementation.
Work Experience
A minimum of fifteen years of progressively responsible experience in establishing inter-relationships between international organizations and national governments, preferably in biodiversity conservation, environmental management, or partnership building. At least five years of experience managing international environmental programs, building strategic alliances, and resource mobilization. International experience with Multilateral Environment Agreements and a strong track record in fundraising are desirable.
