Organizational Context
The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) supports the UN Secretariat's development pillar, fostering international cooperation for sustainable development. The Programme, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (PMEU) within DESA's Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG) strengthens DESA's M&E capacity and coordinates programme plans. This internship is based at UN Headquarters in New York.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Programme, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (PMEU) within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The intern will contribute to strengthening DESA's monitoring and evaluation capabilities and assist in coordinating annual programme plans. Key contributions include supporting the drafting of programme plans, preparing reports for senior management, and assisting with data collection and analysis for evaluations and audits. The role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in programme management, monitoring, and evaluation within a UN Secretariat context, contributing to informed decision-making and the effective implementation of development initiatives.
Responsibilities
Support the drafting and review of DESA’s proposed programme plan for 2028. Draft background papers and senior-level talking points. Prepare meeting summaries, concept notes, and presentations. Consolidate input for senior managers' compacts and Secretariat-wide reporting processes on gender equality, disability inclusion, and multilingualism. Contribute to drafting and reviewing monitoring and evaluation reports, including those from oversight bodies. Assist in data collection, review, and analysis of responses to evaluations and audits. Support the follow-up on findings and recommendations from internal and external evaluations. Research, analyze, and present information on economic, social, and sustainable development topics. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study in business administration, programme management, economics, political science, international relations, public administration, evaluation, or a related field is required. Expertise with data collection and visualization tools is advantageous.
Skills
Excellent drafting skills in English. Ability to analyze, synthesize, and extract essential information. Computer literacy with good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Copilot). Detail-oriented, diligent, and capable of delivering high-quality documents. Expertise with data collection and visualization tools is advantageous.
