Organizational Context
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership and operational support for the UN security management system. The Operational Resilience Section (ORS) within UNDSS focuses on enhancing the department's resilience through innovative solutions for an evolving security landscape. This internship is based in New York and supports ORS's data-driven decision-making initiatives.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support the Operational Resilience Section (ORS) in generating and communicating data-driven analyses and insights to aid decision-making processes. The intern will contribute to enhancing the department's overall resilience by assisting with the transition to automated data pipelines, managing cloud services, and automating workflows. This role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in data engineering within a global security context, supporting the UN's mission to enable safe and effective program delivery in challenging environments. The internship is full-time, unpaid, and expected to last up to six months, with potential for remote or hybrid arrangements.
Responsibilities
The intern will support the strategic and operational objectives of the Operational Resilience Section (ORS). Key duties include assisting in the transition to automated, sustainable, and robust data pipelines within the Microsoft Azure cloud environment. This involves managing, setting up, and configuring cloud services. The intern will also help automate survey-to-reporting workflows using cloud-based systems and serverless tools. Additionally, responsibilities include supporting the development and customization of web applications with a focus on data-driven and geospatial functionality, and monitoring/troubleshooting issues in data harvesting systems and scripts such as Azure Functions, MQuery, Python Scripts, and Azure Data Factory. Other related tasks as assigned will also be part of the role.
Work Experience
No prior professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants must be students in the final year of a bachelor's program, pursuing a Master's degree, or have completed such a program within one year of graduation. A field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications including MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare reports and presentations. Demonstrated keen interest in the UN's work and commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud environment, data pipelines, cloud services management, automation tools, web application development, and scripting languages (e.g., Python) is desirable.
