UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) - Insurance and Nature Junior Consultant

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic partnership between the UN and over 500 financial institutions. It drives the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and fostering a network of leading institutions. UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance to align the financial industry with the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.

Job Purpose

This role supports the technical and coordination efforts of the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) Working Group for Nature. The purpose is to advance the integration of nature-related risks into insurance underwriting and risk frameworks. The consultant will contribute to methodology development, member engagement, and research, thereby strengthening the PSI's agenda and supporting the financial sector's alignment with sustainability goals. This position is crucial for enhancing the team's capacity in this specialized area and ensuring the effective implementation of UNEP FI's strategies.

Responsibilities

Support the technical development of methodologies for nature-related risks within the PSI Working Group for Nature, advancing innovative approaches for the insurance sector. Contribute to research initiatives, translating findings into actionable insights and practical recommendations for PSI members. Manage consultation processes for methodology development, including gathering and consolidating member feedback and coordinating piloting of draft approaches. Drive engagement with Working Group members and technical advisors by coordinating meetings, presentations, and outreach, with a focus on Latin America. Facilitate leadership meetings and report progress updates to the PSI Secretariat and UNEP FI Nature Team. Keep members informed and engaged through regular updates. Support the preparation of nature and insurance-related events, such as CBD COP17. Ensure all communications align with UN core values, including a human rights-based approach, leaving no one behind, and gender equality.

Work Experience

At least one year of experience in the environmental non-profit sector, financial services, commercial consulting, or academic research in sustainable finance is required. Experience relevant to examining risks, policies, and the insurance sector's role in nature preservation is necessary.

Skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work across diverse topics and manage multiple tasks efficiently. Attention to detail. Knowledge of insurance and risk management is desirable. Experience in report writing, managing working groups, and supporting risk integration is desirable. Ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural team. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable. Interest in nature-related risk and sustainable finance is desirable.
