ASSOCIATE DATA SPECIALIST
Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of the UN Secretariat's Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO), support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs. This role is within the UN RCO in Lilongwe, Malawi, contributing to the UN 2.0 shift focused on data, digital, and innovation, under the direct supervision of the Head of the Resident Coordinator's Office.
Job Purpose
The Associate Data Specialist supports the UN Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in Lilongwe, Malawi, by developing and implementing databases, data collection systems, and data analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. This role contributes to the UN's reform efforts and the UN 2.0 shift, focusing on data-driven approaches to accelerate the 2030 Agenda. The specialist will collaborate with internal and external counterparts, including UN agencies and partners, to share information and best practices, ensuring effective support for country-level development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Responsibilities
Implement and maintain databases, data collection systems, and data analytics strategies to enhance statistical efficiency and quality. Analyze and interpret trends and patterns using statistical methods to identify key features and variables in data. Acquire, clean, and manage data from various sources, and implement process improvements for data analytics tasks. Develop reports, dashboards, and basic data visualizations to summarize findings and support decision-making. Track progress on data initiatives, gather business requirements, and compile data insights for stakeholder communications. Serve as the technology and innovation focal point for the RCO, and contribute to building staff capacity in data analytics through training and workshops.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in translating business requirements into technical solutions is required. Experience in data quality assurance and data validation is also required. Experience with data storytelling and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and at least one year in data analytics are desirable.
