Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Statistics Division, specifically the Population and Social Statistics Section (PSS), is responsible for implementing statistical capacity-building programs, collecting and analyzing regional data, and publishing statistical reports. The Division operates under UN mandates and collaborates with national statistical offices, UN entities, and international organizations.
Job Purpose
This internship within the ESCAP Statistics Division's Population and Social Statistics Section offers a full-time, in-person opportunity in Bangkok. The intern will gain practical experience by assisting with various statistical areas, including gender statistics, census data, migration, and civil registration. The role involves supporting research, drafting documents, organizing events, and contributing to capacity-building and communication activities, providing valuable exposure to international statistical work and regional development.
Responsibilities
Assist with statistical work in areas such as gender statistics, population and housing censuses, migration, displacement, statelessness, disability statistics, population registers, citizen data, and the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) initiative. Conduct literature reviews on statistical frameworks, indicators, and country practices. Contribute to drafting background papers, presentations, blogs, and technical documents. Support the organization and servicing of meetings, seminars, trainings, and workshops, including material preparation and note-taking. Provide assistance for capacity-building activities for countries in the Asia-Pacific region and support communication efforts for the section.
Work Experience
No prior work experience is required. The internship is designed for individuals whose training, education, or coursework can benefit the United Nations.
Skills
Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Skills in assisting with statistical work, conducting literature reviews, drafting documents, supporting event organization, and communication activities are beneficial.
