Organizational Context
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is part of the UN Secretariat. The Social Development Division focuses on inequality, social protection, population dynamics, ageing, migration, gender equality, disability, and youth. This internship is within the Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS) in Bangkok.
Job Purpose
This internship within the Sustainable Demographic Transition Section (SDTS) of ESCAP provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in population and social development issues relevant to Asia and the Pacific. The intern will support the section's work in monitoring trends, analyzing data, and formulating policy options related to population dynamics, ageing, migration, and their impact on sustainable development. This role contributes to ESCAP's mandate of promoting inclusive and sustainable development by assisting in research, data compilation, report review, and the development of communication materials to inform policy and engage stakeholders.
Responsibilities
The intern will undertake literature reviews and compile data from secondary sources on population trends, demographic changes, international migration, and population ageing, analyzing their implications for sustainable development and social protection. Responsibilities include assisting in the organization of meetings, reviewing and editing working papers and reports for accuracy and clarity, and developing audio-visual materials such as PowerPoint presentations and info charts for non-technical audiences. The intern will also analyze data using Excel and other statistical products, create substantive website content, and perform other assigned duties. Reporting will be to the Chief of the Section and other professional staff.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field and familiarity with standard software applications are necessary. Desirable experience includes drafting news articles or social media posts, and designing surveys or polls.
Skills
Data analysis (Excel, statistical products), literature review, report writing and editing, presentation development (PowerPoint), website content creation, strong research skills, good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams).
