The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) serves as the Secretariat for the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). UNEP's Regional Office for Africa implements global programmes, fostering regional cooperation on environmental challenges. This role supports the AMCEN Secretariat's mandate and UNEP's Africa Office work, enhancing coordination and technical processes.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to provide crucial coordination and technical support to the AMCEN Secretariat, ensuring the efficient and effective execution of its mandate. The role will support African countries in regional multilateral processes and contribute to UNEP's Africa Office initiatives. The primary objective is to facilitate the successful preparation, coordination, and follow-up of AMCEN activities, including ministerial sessions, Bureau meetings, and the implementation of key decisions. This position is vital for strengthening programme coordination, technical assistance, and stakeholder engagement to advance environmental policy and action across the African continent.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for preparing key project documentation, including an inception report and work plan within two weeks of commencement. Duties involve drafting various technical documents such as policy briefs and reports, and preparing comprehensive meeting documentation, including agendas, summaries, and outcomes. The role also requires the preparation of regular monthly progress reports and a final report that synthesizes all outputs and provides actionable recommendations. These responsibilities are critical for maintaining momentum, ensuring clear communication, and tracking the progress of AMCEN initiatives and decisions.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in environmental policy development and associated natural resource and ecosystem management is required. Experience in programme coordination, technical assistance, and stakeholder engagement within an international environmental context is highly desirable.
