Organizational Context

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva offers an unpaid, full-time internship within its International Investment Agreements (IIAs) Section. This internship provides exposure to UNCTAD's core activities: research, intergovernmental meetings, and technical assistance, primarily for developing countries. The role is based in Geneva and is for a duration of three months.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in international investment law and policy. The intern will support the IIAs Section in its multifaceted work, contributing to research on investment treaties and dispute settlement, assisting in the organization of intergovernmental meetings and capacity-building activities, and supporting technical assistance to governments. The role is designed to enhance the intern's educational background by offering hands-on involvement in UNCTAD's mandate, fostering a deeper understanding of global trade and development issues. The experience will cover research, policy analysis, and event coordination within a dynamic international environment.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist in collecting and analyzing data for UNCTAD's IIA and investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) databases. This includes researching recent investment policy trends and developments, and mapping IIAs based on UNCTAD's framework for sustainable development. Responsibilities extend to supporting the organization and preparation of intergovernmental meetings, such as expert meetings and conferences, including managing invitations and preparing materials. Additionally, the intern will contribute to technical assistance by conducting background research for advisory work and supporting capacity-building activities, which may involve preparing training materials and organizing virtual or in-person events. Proofreading and editing publications, and updating the Investment Policy Hub website are also key duties.

Work Experience

No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, applicants should possess relevant training, education, or coursework that benefits the United Nations in the field of the internship. The focus is on academic background and demonstrated interest rather than prior employment.

Skills

Computer literacy in standard software applications, keen interest in the UN's work, commitment to UN Charter ideals, ability to interact with diverse cultural backgrounds, fluency in English (oral and written). Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset.
