The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates international trade in wildlife. The CITES Secretariat supports Parties in implementing the Convention. The Monitoring of the Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE) program, managed by CITES, aims to monitor illegal elephant killings and build capacity for elephant population management.
Job Purpose
This internship within the CITES MIKE Program in Nairobi offers a six-month opportunity to support communications and programme management activities. The intern will assist in planning, researching, producing, and disseminating communications and multimedia materials related to wildlife conservation and the MIKE Programme's work. The role is crucial for enhancing public awareness, engaging stakeholders, and increasing the visibility of CITES MIKE Programme activities globally. This position contributes to the broader goals of sustainable development and the protection of endangered species through effective communication and programme support.
Responsibilities
The intern will draft content for social media posts and other CITES channels, focusing on CITES MIKE's work and global biodiversity topics. Responsibilities include editing and producing photo and video content, and designing outreach and capacity-building materials such as factsheets and presentations. The role involves organizing and maintaining multimedia asset storage, supporting communication planning for campaigns and events, and monitoring social media and website performance. Additionally, the intern will compile communications reports, maintain tracking lists and calendars for CITES MIKE activities, and assist the supervisor with assigned tasks.
Work Experience
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a relevant academic background and proficiency in graphic design software applications such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, or Canva are required.
