Study - Conservation priorities for sharks and rays in Oceania

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) supports the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS) Secretariat, which administers various international agreements. This consultancy operates under the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MOU), focusing on conservation actions for specific shark and ray species in the Oceania region.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to develop a comprehensive prioritization of conservation activities for shark and ray species listed in Annex 1 of the Sharks MOU within the Oceania region. The outcome will provide Signatories with actionable, science-based recommendations for prioritizing conservation efforts, aligning with the existing Conservation Plan and Programme of Work. The study will utilize a specified methodology and prioritization matrix to guide effective conservation actions, ensuring a favorable conservation status for these migratory species based on the best available scientific information and considering their socio-economic value.

Responsibilities

The consultant will develop an inception report detailing project steps, timelines, and risks. They will apply a defined methodology and prioritization matrix to identify priority species and conservation actions for sharks and rays in the Oceania region, potentially subdividing the region. Assessments of vulnerability and risk may be conducted where data permits. A draft consultation report will be prepared, outlining regional and subregional priorities aligned with the Sharks MOU Conservation Plan. Regional species fact sheets will be developed, and feedback will be solicited from stakeholders. Finally, the consultant will consolidate comments to produce a final report with clear recommendations for priority actions, addressing all aspects of the Sharks MOU Conservation Plan and suggesting future methodological improvements.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible professional experience in conservation planning, project management, and international conservation policy is required. This must include substantial experience with shark and ray conservation, assessing their conservation needs, and formulating international or regional conservation measures. Knowledge of conservation priorities in the Oceania region is also required.
