Organizational Context
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) serves as the UN headquarters in Africa, supporting UNEP, UN-HABITAT, and the Resident Coordination System globally. Located within the Information and Communications Technology Service (ICTS) at UNON, this role is situated in the Infrastructure Management Section (IMS). The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Network and Communications Unit.
Job Purpose
This role is responsible for the day-to-day network administration, network security, and technology research within UNON's Information and Communications Technology Service. The incumbent will manage and maintain the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN), including wireless infrastructure. Key contributions involve analyzing and planning network projects, optimizing network configurations, managing network backups and security policies, and implementing new technologies. The position also supports the design and maintenance of data security projects, automates network tasks using scripting, and troubleshoots network-related issues, ensuring efficient and secure network operations to support UNON's mission.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include managing UNON's Local Area Network (LAN), Wireless Network, and Wide Area Network (WAN). This involves analyzing and planning network projects according to UN standards, optimizing network configurations for efficiency, and managing network backup and security enforcement. The role requires assisting with and supervising personnel/contractors, implementing new technologies for data integration, and supporting data security projects with a focus on network security and monitoring. Maintaining access control lists, creating automation scripts (Python, Ansible), and participating in major network implementations are crucial. Additionally, the incumbent will create and update network documentation, liaise with the service desk for troubleshooting, manage service requests, and act as an escalation point for technical issues. Responsibilities also extend to planning, implementing, and maintaining security controls, performing vulnerability assessments, analyzing IDS alerts, and ensuring network equipment is monitored. Researching and evaluating hardware, software, and communication products, testing new tools, and drafting technical documentation are also key duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in IT, specifically in Routing and Switching, Python Scripting, Network Automation, Troubleshooting, Wireless, and Network Security, is required. Strong technical skills in network design, implementation, troubleshooting, and management are essential. Familiarity with network equipment from vendors like Cisco, Checkpoint, Fortinet, and Ruckus is necessary. One year of experience in data analytics is desirable.
