Organizational Context
UNRWA is a United Nations agency mandated to assist and protect approximately 5.8 million registered Palestine refugees across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, and Gaza. As the largest UN operation in the Middle East, it provides essential services including education, healthcare, and social services, funded primarily by voluntary contributions. This role reports to the Electro-mechanical Design Lead Engineer.
Job Purpose
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for developing detailed mechanical designs for various building projects such as schools, hospitals, clinics, and shelters, ensuring compliance with agency needs, policies, and relevant codes. The role involves contributing to tender documents, identifying innovative materials and techniques for cost-effective and reliable solutions, and incorporating environmental and safety aspects. This position also provides technical advice for alterations, writes inspection reports, liaises with construction teams, and coordinates with other designers to optimize mechanical systems while maintaining building integrity. The engineer will also assist in drafting terms of reference for consultants and supervising their work, ensuring adherence to design standards and procedures.
Responsibilities
Develop detailed mechanical designs for building projects (schools, hospitals, shelters) adhering to agency standards, policies, and codes. Prepare tender documents with specific requirements and descriptions for Bills of Quantities. Research and propose new materials, techniques, and technologies to enhance design quality, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability, including green elements. Provide technical advice and design solutions for premise alterations and conduct building system inspections, documenting findings and remediation needs. Update mechanical design drawings based on as-built information and technical instructions. Coordinate with other design disciplines to optimize mechanical systems and building integrity. Assist in defining consultant terms of reference and supervise their work, ensuring compliance with design criteria. Contribute to progress reports and perform other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Requires at least four years of relevant experience, including a minimum of two years in design for public buildings and developmental projects. Experience with mechanical design software and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools like AutoCAD is also necessary.
