Organizational Context
The United Nations Secretariat, specifically the Executive Office of the Secretary-General's Rule of Law Unit, seeks motivated interns. This role is based in New York and offers a 3-month in-person internship, reporting to full-time professional staff. The internship provides an opportunity to contribute to critical rule of law and human rights initiatives.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience and support to the Rule of Law Unit within the Executive Office of the Secretary-General. Interns will assist professional staff in a variety of tasks related to rule of law and human rights issues. The role is designed to offer valuable exposure to international policy work, contributing to the preparation of high-level meetings, policy papers, and reports. Interns will gain insight into global trends and the implementation of decisions, enhancing their understanding of international affairs and the UN's mandate in promoting the rule of law and human rights. This experience is intended to be mutually beneficial, leveraging the intern's skills while supporting the Unit's objectives.
Responsibilities
Interns will support the preparation of senior-level management meetings, conferences, and retreats. Key duties include preparing background and option papers focused on rule of law issues, and tracking/analyzing decisions and their implementation. They will assist in drafting speeches, talking points, and meeting materials, as well as preparing meeting notes and summaries. A significant responsibility involves monitoring, identifying, and analyzing global trends in rule of law and human rights. Interns will also support the preparation of reports, papers, and correspondence, and produce weekly reports on pertinent international, regional, and national developments in these areas.
Work Experience
No prior work experience is required for this United Nations Internship Programme. However, experience in areas such as rule of law, law, human rights, international affairs, gender equality, policy work, field experience, or executive support is considered desirable.
