Sustainable cooling expert - Asia Pacific

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mitigation Branch, is seeking a consultant to support the Cool Coalition in accelerating sustainable cooling and heat resilience efforts across the Asia-Pacific region. This role will focus on country pilot projects, partner engagement, knowledge development, and fundraising, operating within UNEP's Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to provide technical and strategic expertise to scale up UNEP's climate-friendly cooling, sustainable materials, and heat resilience activities in the Asia-Pacific region, under the Cool Coalition and Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction frameworks. The role involves activating a knowledge base, offering advisory and demonstration support, leading fundraising and outreach initiatives, and contributing to policy dialogues and financing strategies. Key contributions include developing funding proposals, building partnerships, guiding country implementation programs, and facilitating knowledge sharing to advance sustainable cooling solutions and heat resilience across the region.

Responsibilities

Provide technical and strategic expertise to scale UNEP's climate-friendly cooling and heat resilience activities in Asia-Pacific. Support the Cool Coalition Secretariat and Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction by activating knowledge bases, providing advisory and demonstration support, and leading fundraising, scale-up, advocacy, and outreach efforts. Review project deliverables, offer technical guidance to partners, and support policy dialogues and financing strategies for sustainable cooling and built environments, including passive cooling and sustainable materials. Contribute technical inputs to country implementation programs and funding proposals. Engage governments in the region, assess needs and progress, and facilitate unlocking funds for technical assistance. Share best practices between UNEP projects and partner activities, and provide expertise for developing tools, methodologies, reports, and training. Support partner and government engagements, including organizing and providing technical support for country and regional events and training.

Work Experience

A minimum of eight years of relevant professional experience, preferably focused on sustainable urban planning, urban heat mapping, GIS, passive cooling, and green buildings. Experience in technology, financing, policy, and regulatory frameworks related to urban cooling is advantageous. Essential experience includes engaging multiple stakeholders in project development and partnership building. Experience engaging governments and cities on passive cooling in Asia and the Pacific is a strong asset.
