Organizational Context

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), a regional commission of the United Nations, aims to contribute to the economic and social development of the region. This Research Assistant position is within the Agricultural Development Unit (ADU) of the Division of Production, Productivity and Management (DPPM), reporting to the Chief of the Unit.

Job Purpose

The Research Assistant supports the Agricultural Development Unit's work on food systems, bioeconomy, and productive development across various regions. This involves identifying and monitoring substantive aspects, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing background materials for studies and reports. The role contributes to the design, monitoring, and evaluation of public policies by providing essential research support, facilitating in-depth analysis, and maintaining vital information resources. The position also involves participating in substantive discussions and coordinating data collection efforts with other UN offices and research institutions, ultimately supporting informed decision-making and knowledge management within ECLAC.

Responsibilities

The Research Assistant will identify and monitor substantive aspects of the Unit's work, focusing on food systems, bioeconomy, and productive development. Key duties include selecting and evaluating documents, summarizing materials, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing background information for reports and studies. The role involves retrieving and compiling information from diverse sources, preparing inputs for databases and the internet, and collaborating with research institutes. Responsibilities also include assembling and examining statistical material for accuracy, preparing various reports and presentations, and participating in substantive policy discussions. The position requires maintaining and updating files and databases, coordinating data collection with other departments, and assisting with the preparation of documentation for conferences and meetings. Additionally, the Research Assistant will attend meetings, take notes, prepare summaries, and assist with data visualizations and updating information materials.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of experience in collecting and researching data in social, economic development, or related areas is required. This requirement is reduced to five years for candidates with a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in data analytics is desirable. Experience in food systems, bioeconomy, and productive development is also desirable.
