Communications and Knowledge Management Intern

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a leading global environmental authority, seeks to coordinate environmental policy and promote sustainable development. The Ecosystems Division, specifically the Biodiversity, Landscapes and People Unit, works with partners on environmental policy implementation and capacity building. This internship is within this unit, supporting the Global Peatlands Initiative.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to support the communications and knowledge management efforts for the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) Phase II project within UNEP's Ecosystems Division. The role will focus on enhancing the initiative's visibility and information dissemination, ensuring seamless connection with broader unit knowledge management. The intern will contribute to protecting peatlands, the world's largest carbon stock, by managing and updating communication materials, drafting content for various platforms, and facilitating communication within the GPI partnership and with the public. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in environmental communications and knowledge management within an international organization.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for updating and enhancing the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) Knowledge Management tracker, fact sheets, and resources for various communication outputs. This includes drafting and updating content for UNEP and GPI websites, partner hubs, and social media channels. The role involves creating news articles or blogs on peatlands restoration, conservation, and sustainable management topics. Additionally, the intern will assist in preparing for GPI Steering Committee meetings and other partnership events, both virtual and in-person. Responsibilities also include organizing ad hoc meetings, workshops, and teleconferences, preparing agendas, summaries, and minutes, and managing follow-up communications. The intern will serve as a communication liaison within the GPI Partnership and with the public, undertaking other tasks as assigned based on interests and experience.

Work Experience

No specific prior work experience is explicitly required beyond academic qualifications. However, applicants should demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to its ideals. Experience or demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is beneficial. Familiarity with standard software applications is expected.
