Organizational Context
The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides global leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN security management system. UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of UN programmes in challenging environments. The Gender and Inclusivity Unit (GIU) within UNDSS advances gender equality and inclusivity across security operations.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to strengthen the mainstreaming of gender equality and inclusion considerations within UNDSS security operations, particularly in the Indo-Pacific and Middle East regions. The role will contribute to a more enabling work environment and enhance person-centered approaches in field operations. By developing practical guidance, validating tools, and conducting information sessions, the consultant will support UNDSS in providing tailored gender solutions and effective security leadership that meets the diverse needs of personnel and operations, ultimately enabling the UN system's programme activities through trusted security leadership.
Responsibilities
Develop practical guidance for gender-responsive security risk management and operations by consolidating existing data, practices, and recommendations. Validate and pilot tools designed to support a Person-Centered Approach in security operations. Conduct information sessions for UNDSS field staff on the Person-Centered approach and gender-responsive security. Consult with Headquarters stakeholders, multi-country offices, field personnel, subject-matter experts, and relevant UN entities to validate concepts and products. Engage with external stakeholders and coordination mechanisms to identify complementary practices and lessons learned, enhancing coordination and coherence across the UN system. Prepare a comprehensive Final Report detailing findings and recommendations.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in developing and designing gender-related solutions within complex projects or programmes is required. Previous experience with gender, diversity, and inclusion projects within the UN or similar international organizations is highly desirable. Experience in data analytics and visualization is also desirable.
