AMR One Health Surveillance Specialist

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. Its Industry and Economy Division promotes sustainable practices and sound chemical management. The Chemicals and Health Branch addresses critical issues like antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health approach, focusing on environmental drivers and challenges.

Job Purpose

This role supports UNEP's commitment to tackling the environmental drivers of AMR via a One Health approach. The specialist will finalize a conceptual roadmap for global environmental AMR surveillance and develop its implementation plan. Key contributions include establishing an expert group, identifying and analyzing surveillance initiatives, and supporting regional offices in assessing country needs and developing scoping studies. The role also involves creating knowledge products to elaborate on the purpose, scope, and methodology of environmental AMR surveillance, complementing existing strategies and enhancing global efforts.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement a conceptual roadmap for global environmental AMR surveillance, including timelines, milestones, and stakeholder engagement. Establish and manage an expert group to support UNEP's environmental AMR surveillance efforts. Conduct research, literature reviews, and interviews to identify and analyze relevant monitoring and surveillance initiatives, options, and platforms. Provide technical support to UNEP regional offices, assisting with country needs assessments and the development of scoping studies. Create knowledge products detailing the purpose, scope, and methodology of environmental AMR surveillance. Ensure environmental aspects are integrated into the Global Integrated Surveillance System for AMR/AMU and support Quadripartite organizations' integrated surveillance work. Offer technical input for project proposals, reports, concept notes, and communication materials.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of professional experience in surveillance, with substantial experience in AMR surveillance within a One Health framework. Expertise in designing, developing, and implementing One Health and/or environmental AMR surveillance systems in diverse settings is required. Experience coordinating international partners and stakeholders is essential.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to work in multicultural environments and build relationships with strategic partners. Expertise in AMR surveillance and One Health frameworks. Experience in developing and implementing surveillance systems. Stakeholder coordination and technical writing abilities.
