The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna seeks a consultant to support its mandate of upholding human rights in addressing crime, corruption, drugs, and terrorism. This role will enhance the systematic mainstreaming of human rights across UNODC's normative, policy, and programmatic work, ensuring coherence and consistency.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this consultancy is to bolster UNODC's ongoing efforts to integrate human rights principles and policies, including the Human Rights Due Diligence Policy (HRDDP) and Framework Policy (HRDDFP), across its operational, programmatic, and policy initiatives. The role will involve coordinating input, reviewing written outputs, and ensuring substantive analysis in documents like briefing notes and reports. This contributes to informed decision-making, strengthens institutional guidance on human rights due diligence, and enhances the visibility and impact of UNODC's human rights work internally and with external stakeholders.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include supporting the organization of briefing and training sessions on human rights mainstreaming and HRDDP for UNODC staff. The consultant will lead the coordination and update of the UNODC Knowledge Portal on Human Rights, requiring inter-divisional collaboration and technical expertise for digital platforms. They will draft various written outputs, including policy documents and reports related to criminal justice and UNODC mandates. Additionally, the role involves conducting research and mapping exercises to identify and repository human rights tools within the UN system and UNODC, providing expertise to colleagues. The consultant will also plan and design dissemination strategies for e-learning modules and guidance tools, and collect/analyze data to generate insights for planning and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of international or national work experience in areas related to peace, justice, sustainable development, human rights, and the rule of law is required. Experience working with the United Nations and on UNODC mandate areas (e.g., counter-terrorism, organized crime, human rights) is also required. Experience with UNODC Field offices and in writing/editing UN documents is desirable.
Skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision. Experience in writing or editing documents for the United Nations. Experience working with UNODC Field offices. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
