Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a Project Manager to support the GEF Circular Cities Beyond Plastics project. This initiative focuses on reducing marine plastic pollution in Latin American and Caribbean cities through circular economy approaches. The project is executed by the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat in Colombia, Jamaica, and Panama.
Job Purpose
The Project Manager will be responsible for the effective implementation, management, coordination, monitoring, and reporting of the GEF Circular Cities Beyond Plastics project. This role is crucial for ensuring the successful delivery of project activities and strengthening support to participating cities in their transition towards a circular economy. The ultimate goal is to significantly reduce marine plastic pollution in the Latin American and Caribbean regions by enabling city-level governments and businesses to adopt sustainable practices, aligning with national and international commitments to combat plastic waste.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include: overseeing project activity implementation and evaluation, monitoring progress, analyzing data, and proposing corrective actions. The role involves drafting, validating, and managing partner agreements. It requires preparing various written outputs such as background papers and reports, and providing technical support to participating cities on circular economy approaches for plastic reduction. Developing and applying city-level monitoring methodologies and indicators is essential. The Project Manager will also support the organization of consultations and meetings, represent the project at regional and international forums, and contribute to capturing project progress, challenges, and learnings. Coordination of budget, funding, and reporting activities, including preparing progress and financial reports, is also a core duty.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in environmental or natural resources management at regional and national levels is required. Demonstrated experience in project management and stakeholder coordination is essential. Experience with plastic pollution and circular economy projects is highly desirable, as is experience working with governments or UN agencies in the Wider Caribbean Region.
