Organizational Context

The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) in Valencia, Spain, provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information, and Telecommunications services globally. The Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) delivers innovative solutions to support UN operations. This internship is within the Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU), focusing on geospatial analytics and Earth Observation data.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to support the Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU) in analyzing and integrating Earth Observation and geospatial data. The role contributes to enhancing geospatial information and situational awareness for UN operations worldwide. The intern will assist in developing analytical pipelines for night-time light data, conducting geospatial and imagery analysis, extracting indicators from open-source intelligence, and supporting data validation and research on new technologies. The goal is to provide valuable geospatial insights for operational planning, monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making across the UN system, ensuring quality outputs and compliance with standards.

Responsibilities

Assist in developing analytical pipelines for open-source satellite night-time light data to support geo-analytical activities, particularly for border monitoring. Support remote sensing analysis using multi-sensor night-time lights and other Earth Observation data for change detection, time-series analysis, and monitoring. Aid in collecting and integrating open-source information and extracting geospatial indicators. Contribute to data validation, documentation, and research on new technologies, including AI. Coordinate with other units within the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) to integrate datasets and analytical outputs into UN Maps and related services, ensuring adherence to quality standards and organizational best practices.

Work Experience

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Demonstrated knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams) is required. Ability to draft news articles/social media posts and design surveys/polls is desirable.
