This position is within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), specifically the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU), based in Odesa. The incumbent reports to the Head of Field Office, operating within their designated geographical area of responsibility.
Job Purpose
The Assistant Human Rights Officer will contribute to researching and collecting information on human rights issues, trends, and violations, including their gender dimensions. The role involves assisting in the analysis of this information to understand its impact on the human rights situation in the assigned area. Key functions include drafting reports and correspondence, supporting hearings and consultations, maintaining awareness of political and legal developments, and promoting community mobilization and advocacy efforts. The position also supports coordination with government, NGOs, and UN partners, and contributes to data analysis and reporting using visualization methods to inform planning and decision-making.
Responsibilities
Research and collect information on human rights issues, trends, and violations, including gender dimensions, from various data sources. Analyze collected information to assess its impact on the human rights situation in the assigned area. Draft reports, correspondence, briefing notes, and analytical documents related to human rights matters. Assist in hearings and consultations, preparing summaries of discussions and outcomes. Maintain awareness of current human rights issues and relevant political/legal developments. Support the implementation of activities in compliance with standards, including protection and safe handling of information. Promote community mobilization and efforts focused on the exercise of population rights. Assist in advocacy efforts, including scheduling and documenting meetings with authorities and other actors. Coordinate with government, NGOs, and UN partners, focusing on gathering and maintaining baseline data for vulnerable groups. Maintain and update project tracking tools. Contribute to data collection, analysis, and identification of trends, providing insights through data visualization for planning and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related area is required. Experience conducting interviews with victims and witnesses of human rights violations and experience within the UN common system or similar international organizations are desirable.

Professionalism, research and analytical skills, ability to identify and resolve human rights issues, data collection and analysis, report drafting, communication (written and verbal), planning and organizing, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure.
