The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) Regional Liaison Office for Africa (RLO Africa), under the Global Policy Advocacy and Regional Cooperation unit, supports African Parties in implementing the Convention and facilitates regional coordination. This consultant role is based in Rabat and supports the RLO Africa work programme.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support the effective implementation of the RLO Africa work programme by strengthening regional coordination, enhancing engagement with African Parties and partners, improving policy analysis and communication, and contributing to the UNCCD's objectives in Africa. The role provides crucial technical, analytical, coordination, and communication support across the regional portfolio, ensuring the smooth execution of annual workplans and regional activities. The consultant will contribute to policy development, partnership building, and the overall advancement of sustainable land management initiatives within the African region, aligning with the UNCCD's mandate to address desertification, land degradation, and drought.
Responsibilities
The consultant will support the daily planning, implementation, and follow-up of the RLO Africa 2026-2027 annual workplan and regional activities. Key duties include drafting various technical documents such as briefing notes, concept notes, meeting reports, mission reports, and talking points. The role involves monitoring regional developments relevant to UNCCD implementation and preparing concise analytical updates. The consultant will liaise with National Focal Points, Science and Technology Correspondents, regional organizations, and partners to facilitate regional activities. Support will also be provided for regional meetings, webinars, and workshops, including preparing agendas, participant lists, documentation, and follow-up actions. Additionally, the consultant will assist in developing partnerships, preparing project concepts, and funding proposals, while maintaining activity trackers and providing progress updates.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in international environmental policy, multilateral negotiations, or sustainable development is required. Experience supporting COP or intergovernmental negotiation processes is highly desirable, as is demonstrated experience collaborating with Regional Liaison Officers and in-depth knowledge of UNCCD processes.
