Organizational Context

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is a UN regional commission dedicated to economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean. This internship is within the Secretariat of the Escazú Agreement, hosted by the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division at ECLAC in Santiago, Chile.

Job Purpose

This internship offers a valuable opportunity to contribute to the Secretariat of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (Escazú Agreement). The intern will support the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division of ECLAC by conducting legal and policy research, assisting with meeting preparations, drafting documents, and providing logistical support. This role is designed to provide practical experience in international environmental law and policy within a UN framework, contributing to the region's sustainable development goals.

Responsibilities

The intern will undertake legal and policy research pertinent to the Escazú Agreement. Key duties include assisting in the preparation and note-taking for various meetings and activities. The role involves drafting documents, minutes, and reports, as well as providing English/Spanish translations for these materials. Additionally, the intern will prepare summaries and translations of incoming documents, emails, and forms for the Secretariat and Agreement bodies. General and logistical support for meetings and activities will also be provided, alongside other assigned duties.

Work Experience

Professional work experience is not required for this internship program. The focus is on academic enrollment or recent graduation in relevant fields.

Skills

Legal and policy research, document drafting, translation (English/Spanish), meeting support, logistical support, knowledge of the Escazú Agreement, Spanish fluency, English proficiency.
