Organizational Context
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Regional Office for Africa (ROA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is offering an internship. This role is within the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes (ALDC). The internship is unpaid, full-time, and can be conducted in-person or remotely.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience within UNCTAD's Regional Office for Africa. The intern will support the dissemination of UNCTAD research, assist in organizing meetings and briefings with various stakeholders, and contribute to developing concept notes and project proposals. The role involves undertaking analysis on topical African issues relevant to UNCTAD's mandate, identifying research documents, and preparing briefing notes and reports. Additionally, the intern will help identify UNCTAD participation opportunities in regional initiatives and update office databases. This position offers a valuable opportunity to gain exposure to international trade and development work in Africa.
Responsibilities
Support the dissemination of UNCTAD's research and findings. Assist in organizing and preparing for briefings and meetings with member states, regional economic communities, partners, and parliamentarians. Contribute to the development of concept notes and project proposals within ALDC ROA's work areas. Conduct analysis on current issues affecting the African continent relevant to UNCTAD's mandate. Identify and catalogue updated research documents and relevant information. Prepare briefing notes, workshop reports, and compile statistics. Attend and summarize conferences and meetings. Identify opportunities for UNCTAD's participation in key African and regional initiatives and meetings. Update and improve office databases and perform internet-based research. Assist the supervisor with any other assigned tasks.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. A degree in economics or a related field is required. Experience with standard software applications, particularly MS Word, PowerPoint, and Teams, is also required.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams). Demonstrated keen interest in the UN's work and commitment to its ideals. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Strong analytical skills for research and proposal development. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Knowledge of French is desirable.
