Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Secretariat manages the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions, which are international environmental agreements focused on protecting human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes. This internship is based in Geneva and supports the Governance Branch in preparing for upcoming Conferences of the Parties.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide support to the Governance Branch of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions Secretariat in Geneva. The intern will primarily assist in the preparations for the 2027 Conferences of the Parties (COP) meetings. This involves a range of tasks including document preparation, drafting communications, organizing meetings and events, developing outreach materials, and supporting training initiatives for chairs and negotiators. The role contributes to the effective functioning and coordination of these critical multilateral environmental agreements, ensuring smooth preparation and execution of the COP meetings.
Responsibilities
Assist the Governance Branch in preparing for the 2027 Conferences of the Parties (COP) to the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions. This includes preparing and formatting various meeting documents and reports. Draft letters, presentations, and training materials. Support the organization of regional preparatory meetings, bureaux meetings, webinars, teleconferences, and other briefings. Assist in organizing side events and other related activities. Develop outreach materials and web content. Compile and format chairs' notes. Support the training of chairs and negotiators. Provide general support to COP coordinators for meeting preparations and execution as required.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is mandatory. Prior experience in a relevant field, such as through professional work, publications, or projects, is considered an advantage.
Skills
Document preparation and formatting, drafting written outputs (letters, presentations), event organization support, outreach material development, web content assistance, compilation and formatting of notes, training support, strong English language proficiency.
