Job Purpose
This internship offers a unique opportunity to assist the Governance Branch of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions in implementing their 2026-2027 work programme. The role involves crucial legal research, analysis, and drafting to support the conventions' objectives. The intern will contribute to preparations for and follow-up of key meetings, assist with compliance committee work, and support capacity-building activities. This position provides practical experience in international environmental law and the functioning of multilateral environmental agreements, contributing to global efforts in chemical and waste management.
Responsibilities
Assist the Governance Branch in executing the 2026-2027 work programme for the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions. Conduct information collection, legal research, and analysis. Draft legal documents, letters, presentations, and training materials. Support preparations for, during, and follow-up of governing and subsidiary body meetings, including conferences of the Parties. Assist with compliance committee work and specific submissions. Engage in cooperation and coordination with other international bodies. Address trade and environment legal matters, and issues related to illegal traffic and enforcement. Provide support for legal technical assistance and capacity-building activities. Communicate legal information and assist with national legal frameworks. Contribute to the preparation of publications and outreach materials.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is essential. Prior experience in a relevant field, such as professional work, publications, or projects, is considered an advantage.
