Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosts the Secretariats for the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions. These multilateral environmental agreements aim to protect human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes. This internship is based in Geneva and supports the Governance Branch in implementing the conventions' work programmes.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to provide practical experience in international environmental law and policy. The intern will support the Secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions in their mission to protect human health and the environment. Key contributions include assisting with the implementation of the 2026-2027 work programme, conducting legal research, drafting documents, and supporting preparations for governing body meetings and conferences of the Parties. The role offers exposure to various legal and technical aspects of these critical environmental treaties, contributing to global efforts in managing hazardous chemicals and wastes.

Responsibilities

Assist the Governance Branch in implementing the 2026-2027 work programme for the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions. Conduct information collection, legal research, and analysis. Draft correspondence, legal documents, presentations, and training materials. Support preparations for, participation in, and follow-up to meetings of governing and subsidiary bodies, including compliance committees and conferences of the Parties. Assist with compliance committee work programmes and specific submissions. Facilitate cooperation and coordination with other international bodies. Address trade and environment legal matters, and issues related to illegal traffic and enforcement of the conventions. Support legal technical assistance and capacity-building activities. Communicate legal information and assist with national legal frameworks. Contribute to the preparation of publications and outreach materials.

Work Experience

No professional work experience is required for the UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is mandatory. Experience in a related field, such as professional experience, publications, or projects, is considered an advantage.

Skills

Legal research and analysis, drafting legal documents, information collection, communication, cooperation, coordination, knowledge of international environmental law, understanding of hazardous chemicals and waste management conventions.
