CCAC Waste Specialist (for Brasilia)
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a Waste Specialist to support the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Accelerator in Brazil. This role will provide technical assistance to the SLCP Unit, focusing on mitigating short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) in the waste sector, particularly organic waste and wastewater. The specialist will work with various stakeholders to align national policies with CCAC goals and promote sustainable waste management practices.
Job Purpose
The Waste Specialist will provide crucial technical support to UNEP's SLCP Unit, focusing on developing and implementing strategies to mitigate short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) within Brazil's waste sector. This includes addressing organic waste and wastewater management through a clean air and climate lens, ensuring alignment with national policies and CCAC objectives. The role aims to foster collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including government ministries and subnational authorities, to orient waste policies towards SLCP reduction while generating multiple co-benefits like job creation and improved air quality. The specialist will also contribute to developing and implementing financing mechanisms and capacity-building initiatives to scale up SLCP mitigation solutions, seeking synergies with other sectors and strengthening Brazil's leadership in the CCAC Waste Hub.
Responsibilities
Provide technical support to the SLCP Unit for developing SLCP mitigation actions in the waste sector, focusing on organic waste and wastewater, and aligning with Brazil's policy context and CCAC Accelerator goals. Collaborate with ministries, subnational governments, and other stakeholders to orient national waste policies for SLCP mitigation, following the CCAC waste management hierarchy and achieving co-benefits. Support the development and implementation of systems for source segregation, treatment, and valorization of organic waste, enhancing domestic capacity. Contribute to designing and implementing financing mechanisms for SLCP mitigation solutions in the waste sector, including mobilizing domestic resources and engaging the private sector. Seek synergy opportunities with agriculture and energy sectors. Organize stakeholder capacity-building and training opportunities. Coordinate with the CCAC Secretariat to enhance collaboration and support Brazil's leadership in the CCAC Waste Hub, facilitating national waste actors' engagement in CCAC initiatives. Technically support the review of CCAC project documents and participate in relevant events to raise the visibility of SLCP mitigation efforts.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in climate change and waste management is required. Experience in writing reports, data analysis, and providing technical advice to high-level stakeholders is necessary. Experience with organic waste management systems, financing mechanisms for the waste sector, and short-lived climate pollutants is highly desirable. Experience with Brazil's public sector and climate finance is an asset.
