Organizational Context

The United Nations Department of Global Communications in Geneva seeks a Chief of Unit for its Radio, Television and Webcast Section. This role, reporting to the Chief of Section, is crucial for managing broadcast coverage and operations from the UN Information Service Geneva hub.

Job Purpose

The Chief of Unit is responsible for leading the planning, coordination, and execution of broadcast coverage for the UN Department of Global Communications, operating from the UN Information Service Geneva hub. This involves managing the broadcast team, overseeing daily operations for meetings and press events, and ensuring technical quality for live broadcasts and webcasts. The role drives the scheduling and coordination of video and multimedia coverage, manages team performance, and handles administrative and budgetary aspects of production activities. A key function is ensuring timely production and distribution of video news edits, coordinating with international media, and representing the UN Information Service in relevant communication planning and global team meetings. The position also involves advising other UN entities on broadcast needs and building partnerships to secure support for coverage.

Responsibilities

Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of broadcast coverage for the UN Department of Global Communications from the Geneva hub. Manage the broadcast team, overseeing daily operations for meetings, press events, and technical aspects of press conferences, ensuring seamless integration with webcast operations. Drive the scheduling of video and multimedia coverage, coordinating with the News Unit and distributing workload effectively. Monitor broadcasting and video production workflows, ensuring quality assurance and timeliness in staff performance. Oversee substantive and administrative activities, including hardware/software procurement and budget management for broadcast and video production. Ensure timely production and distribution of video news edits, aligning with global news cycles and UN communication priorities, and coordinate distribution to international media. Represent the UN Information Service in communication planning and UN Web TV meetings, and collaborate with other UN entities on their broadcast needs. Provide expert advice on broadcast, studio management, and technical workflows, resolving multimedia asset issues. Build partnerships with stakeholders to secure political and financial support for broadcast and video coverage.

Work Experience

A minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in communication, including technical aspects of live broadcasting, studio operations, and video production in an international setting, is required. Experience in managing a multimedia team and producing video news edits for international broadcasters is also required. Experience with livestreaming operations is desirable.
