Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development and adequate shelter for all. It implements the EU Operational Support to the IGAD Platform, a regional program focused on strengthening capacities for displacement response and sustainable development in South Sudan and the IGAD region. This role is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Job Purpose
This role supports the effective implementation of the South Sudan component of the EU Operational Support to the IGAD Platform. The purpose is to provide crucial administrative, operational, and programme support, ensuring project activities are coordinated, delivered on time, and within budget. The role contributes to UN-Habitat's mandate by facilitating sustainable urbanization, inclusive governance, and durable solutions for displacement-affected communities through meticulous planning, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and stakeholder engagement, aligning with donor and UN-Habitat requirements.
Responsibilities
The Regional Urban Planner will be responsible for strategic planning and technical work, including collecting, validating, and analyzing spatial data, and developing GIS databases for evidence-based decision-making. This involves conducting multi-scalar spatial analyses of conditions, trends, and environmental factors, and mapping infrastructure. The role also entails producing visualizations, identifying infrastructure investments, and preparing evidence-based technical reports. Coordination and field support include reporting on project progress, supporting field missions, translating findings into actionable recommendations, facilitating stakeholder consultations and workshops, and providing technical support for monitoring, evaluations, and knowledge product dissemination.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant work experience in urban development and planning is required. Experience with GIS/ArcGIS and Adobe Suite tools is also necessary. Experience in urban development, migration, displacement, or resilience programs, particularly with international organizations, is desirable.
Skills
Proficiency in GIS/ArcGIS and Adobe Suite Tools (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop). Experience managing spatial, regional, and urban data. Strong analytical and reporting skills. Ability to support project coordination, stakeholder engagement, and field missions.
