Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide practical experience in budget and finance operations within a UN agency. The intern will support the Budget, Finance and Operational Support Section (BFOSS) at UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi. Key contributions include assisting with the preparation of annual financial statements, managing accounts receivable and payable processes, supporting budget planning and monitoring activities, and contributing to knowledge management efforts. The role is designed to offer hands-on experience in financial administration, reporting, and operational support, aligning with UN-Habitat's broader objectives of promoting sustainable urbanization and reducing inequality.
Responsibilities
Assist in the preparation and review of annual financial statements and related disclosures. Support accounts receivable by preparing donor contribution receipts and related documentation. Aid in accounts payable by coordinating petty cash reporting and reconciling transactions. Contribute to budget planning by documenting and analyzing discussions from governing body sessions. Assist in budget monitoring by tracking expenditures, identifying variances, and flagging potential risks. Support knowledge management by organizing and maintaining section records, templates, and standard operating procedures. Provide administrative support, including coordinating meetings, preparing minutes, and monitoring UN Business Operations Strategy inputs. Perform other related duties as required to ensure smooth financial and operational support.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to budget and finance is necessary. Experience in an international and multicultural environment is desirable. Applicants should be able to demonstrate how their academic, professional, volunteer, or extracurricular activities have provided exposure to international or multicultural settings.
Skills
Computer literacy in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite), with advanced proficiency in MS Excel. Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its ideals. Fluency in oral and written English. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
