Organizational Context
This Interpreter position is situated within the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (OSESGY) in Amman, Jordan. The role reports directly to the Chief of Staff, playing a crucial part in facilitating communication for the Special Envoy's office.
Job Purpose
The Interpreter is responsible for providing high-quality consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between local languages and UN working languages. This role is critical for enabling effective communication during meetings, conferences, negotiations, and operational activities involving UN officials, national authorities, and other stakeholders. The incumbent ensures that interpretation services maintain accuracy, consistency, and fidelity to the original meaning, tone, and nuances, utilizing appropriate UN terminology. The position also supports communication with host-country institutions and national counterparts, and may involve escort and field interpretation for visiting delegations. Additionally, the role contributes to maintaining terminology resources and ensuring cultural and linguistic adaptation of communications.
Responsibilities
The Interpreter provides consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between local languages and UN working languages for meetings, conferences, negotiations, and operational activities, facilitating communication among UN officials, national authorities, and stakeholders. The role ensures high standards of accuracy, consistency, and fidelity to the original message, using correct UN terminology. Responsibilities include escort and field interpretation for visiting delegations and supporting communication with host-country institutions. The incumbent also reviews and proofreads translated texts, maintains terminology resources, and contributes to terminology databases. Support is provided to the Chief/Head of Unit in planning and coordinating interpretation services, ensuring cultural and linguistic adaptation of materials. The role may involve interpreting in high-level or sensitive meetings and potentially coordinating interpretation assignments or acting as a lead interpreter.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional experience in English and Arabic translation and interpretation within international organizations, NGOs, or educational institutions is required. Experience within a UN special political mission of at least three years is desirable.
