Organizational Context

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in South Sudan supports programme activities through safe and reliable transportation. This role ensures compliance with UN safety, security, and fleet management standards, enabling efficient field operations and project implementation. The position is based in Juba for an expected duration of 6 months.

Job Purpose

The Driver's primary purpose is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation and logistical support for UN-Habitat staff, consultants, and project activities in South Sudan. This role is crucial for enabling the effective implementation of field operations, stakeholder engagements, and programme activities by ensuring timely and secure movement of personnel and materials. The Driver will operate UN-Habitat vehicles in accordance with all applicable UN safety, security, and administrative requirements, contributing directly to the successful execution of UN-Habitat's mandate in promoting sustainable urban development and providing adequate shelter for all, particularly in challenging environments.

Responsibilities

The Driver is responsible for operating UN-Habitat vehicles safely for official travel, transporting staff and consultants in compliance with UN policies. This includes providing transportation for field missions, project activities, meetings, workshops, and assessments. The role involves transporting project materials, supplies, and documents to activity sites. The Driver must ensure timely pick-up and drop-off, plan efficient travel routes, and support field teams as needed. Maintenance of assigned vehicles, including daily inspections and reporting of faults, is essential. The Driver will also maintain accurate logs for vehicle movements, mileage, fuel, and maintenance, and ensure all vehicle documentation is up-to-date. Compliance with local traffic laws and UN security regulations is mandatory.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of professional driving experience is required. Experience driving 4WD vehicles in rural, field-based, or challenging operating environments is desirable. Experience supporting UN, humanitarian, development, or donor-funded projects is also desirable.

Skills

Proficiency in driving 4WD vehicles, knowledge of local traffic regulations and road safety, basic vehicle maintenance, defensive driving, and basic computer/email skills are required or desirable.
