Successful applicants will be placed on the DGACM Global Language Register as Spanish interpreters for temporary, When Actually Employed (WAE) assignments. The role operates under the general supervision of the Chief Interpreter at the assigned duty station.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to provide essential interpretation services for United Nations meetings and conferences. Successful candidates will be added to the Global Language Register for Spanish interpreters, enabling them to undertake temporary assignments on a When Actually Employed (WAE) basis. The interpreter will translate speeches from English and French into Spanish, ensuring effective communication across diverse linguistic contexts. In some instances, interpreters may be assigned to sensitive meetings or function as team leaders, contributing to the smooth operation of multilingual discussions and the overall mandate of the UN.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is to provide simultaneous interpretation into Spanish of speeches delivered in English and French during UN meetings and conferences. This includes ensuring accurate and nuanced translation of complex subject matter across political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical fields. Additionally, interpreters may be assigned to sensitive meetings requiring discretion and precision. In certain situations, the role may involve functioning as a team leader for other interpreters assigned to a specific meeting, coordinating efforts to ensure seamless interpretation services and contributing to the overall efficiency of the conference.
Work Experience
A minimum of 50 proven days of conference interpretation into Spanish is required if a formal university qualification in conference interpretation is not held. Experience as a conference interpreter in an international organization or for the United Nations is desirable. At least one year of overall experience in conference interpretation is also desirable.
