Consultant - Edible Orchid Specialist

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosts the CITES Secretariat, which administers an international agreement to ensure wild fauna and flora trade does not threaten species survival. This role supports the CITES Secretariat's work programme by developing identification materials and compiling information for awareness-raising on edible tuberous orchids used in international trade.

Job Purpose

This consultancy aims to contribute to the CITES Secretariat's efforts in managing the international trade of edible tuberous orchids, specifically those used for chikanda production. The specialist will compile crucial information and develop identification materials to aid Parties in implementing and enforcing Appendix-II requirements. This work directly supports Decision 20.237, focusing on key species within the Disa, Habenaria, and Satyrium genera. The ultimate goal is to enhance awareness and facilitate accurate identification of these species in international trade, thereby contributing to their conservation and sustainable use.

Responsibilities

The Edible Orchid Specialist will produce comprehensive information on tuberous orchids traded internationally for chikanda production, including images of tubers in various trade forms to aid identification. This information will be used for developing awareness-raising materials. Additionally, the specialist will prepare identification sheets for at least 15 key species within the Disa, Habenaria, and Satyrium genera, based on CITES guidelines. This involves identifying key species through report analysis, trade data, expert knowledge, and consultations, and subsequently developing draft identification materials for Secretariat review. The work supports CITES Parties in enforcing regulations on the international trade of these specific orchid species.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of relevant experience in natural sciences, natural resources management, environmental sciences, forestry, or agroforestry is required. Demonstrated experience in botanical research and identification of tuberous orchids is essential. Experience supporting work related to tuberous orchids in Southern Africa is also required.
