Programme Support - Public Policy Intern

Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosts the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) in Montreal. This role is situated within the SCBD, under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer. The internship focuses on environmental policy and sustainable development within the UN system.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to support the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) by conducting research and analysis on national policy instruments and recent COP decisions related to synergies across the Rio Conventions. The intern will contribute to analytical products, drafting inputs, and supporting initiatives that promote enhanced cooperation and synergistic implementation among these conventions. The role provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in international environmental policy and sustainable development within a UN framework, contributing to the SCBD's mandate.

Responsibilities

Conduct research and analysis of national policy instruments (e.g., NBSAPs, NDCs, LDN targets) and COP decisions relevant to synergies across the Rio Conventions. Review and analyze COP decisions to identify mandates for cooperation. Prepare analytical summaries, briefing notes, and comparative matrices on areas of convergence and gaps. Support activities of the Joint Liaison Group (JLG) of the Rio Conventions, including research and documentation. Assist in drafting reports, technical papers, and presentations on convention synergies. Support the organization of workshops, side events, and consultations. Perform other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
