Intern (Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling)

Organizational Context

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is responsible for implementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its protocols. The Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) within UNODC focuses on advancing the international agenda to combat these crimes, providing technical assistance, and developing knowledge products. This internship is situated within the HTMSS in Vienna.

Job Purpose

This internship provides substantive, organizational, and logistical support to the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section (HTMSS) at UNODC. Interns will contribute to the section's work in areas such as technical cooperation, normative and policy development, knowledge creation, and partnerships. The role involves research, analysis, and support for projects and activities aimed at combating human trafficking and migrant smuggling, aligning with UNODC's mandate to assist Member States in implementing relevant protocols and respecting the rights of migrants and victims.

Responsibilities

Interns will conduct background research and analysis on country situations, trends, legal frameworks, and concepts related to human trafficking and migrant smuggling. They will assist in planning, implementing, and monitoring technical assistance projects and activities, and support the preparation of training materials for capacity-building workshops. Responsibilities also include collecting and analyzing case-law, managing information on UNODC platforms, identifying areas for knowledge development, and researching emerging issues. Interns may also assist in organizing intergovernmental meetings and other events, contribute to drafting official submissions, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, liaise with external organizations and Member States, and prepare communication materials.

Work Experience

No specific prior work experience is explicitly required for this internship. However, candidates are expected to have sound analytical and drafting skills, proficiency in standard computer applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and its ideals.
