Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Resident Coordinator System (RCS) is undergoing reform to enhance effectiveness in achieving the 2030 Agenda and SDGs. UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCOs), led by empowered Resident Coordinators, support country-level development priorities. This role is within the UN RCO in Juba, South Sudan, reporting to the Development Coordination Officer, Strategic Planning and RCO Team Leader.
Job Purpose
This Data Specialist role supports the UN Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) in Juba, South Sudan, contributing to the UN's reform efforts focused on achieving the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The purpose is to develop and implement robust databases, data collection systems, and analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. The role involves identifying trends, analyzing data, and creating reports and visualizations to inform decision-making on development, humanitarian, and peace initiatives. It also entails collaborating with internal and external counterparts, documenting methodologies, and building data analytics capacity within the office, aligning with the UN 2.0 shift towards data-driven approaches.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and analytics to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. Identify, analyze, and interpret trends using statistical methods on structured and unstructured data. Develop and implement analysis, reporting, and quality control capabilities, identifying data sources and process improvement opportunities. Create reports, dashboards, and visualizations to summarize findings for management, particularly on development, humanitarian, and peace nexus issues. Document methodologies and establish data practices. Lead the production of data products and draft inputs for various reports and communications. Collaborate with data engineers and scientists to enhance data flows and quality. Stay updated on data analytics best practices and technologies. Conduct data analytics training for staff and support project execution through robust data analysis.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in translating business requirements into technical solutions is required. Demonstrated skills in data storytelling and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, R) are essential. Experience in data quality assurance and validation is required. Experience supporting research, data analysis, knowledge management, or project management in development cooperation is desirable.
