Organizational Context

The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of a global reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under empowered UN Resident Coordinators. The Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO) within the UN Secretariat oversees the Resident Coordinator system. The UN Multi-Country Resident Coordinator's Office (MCO) in Pohnpei, FSM, supports five Pacific Small Island Developing States, focusing on strategic planning, coordination, communications, and partnerships.

Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Multi-Country Resident Coordinator's Office (MCO) in Pohnpei, FSM, and its oversight of five Pacific Small Island Developing States. This position contributes to the UN's reform efforts by enhancing communication strategies to effectively achieve the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals. The role involves managing internal and external relationships to disseminate information, coordinate communication activities, and support reporting. By fostering partnerships and engaging diverse audiences, the officer helps build support for UN initiatives, strengthens information integrity, and contributes to advocacy and outreach campaigns, ultimately advancing UN priorities in the region.

Responsibilities

The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of communication strategies, including media monitoring, analysis of public narratives, and identification of reputational risks. This includes drafting compelling narratives and messaging, creating optimized content for various platforms, and producing communications products like press releases and reports. The role involves media mapping, fostering relationships with media outlets, and developing media lines, especially for crisis situations. Additionally, the officer will coordinate press conferences and media events, act as a spokesperson when required, and develop strategic communications partnerships. They will also contribute to outreach and advocacy campaigns, create content for radio and podcasts, and assist in developing communication policies and training materials. Monitoring and reporting on communication activities and analyzing data for informed decision-making are also key duties.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of experience in communications, international relations, or a related field is required. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communication strategies and knowledge of media monitoring tools are essential. Experience in data analytics is desirable, as are skills in communicating complex matters to diverse audiences and developing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
