Information Analyst Internship

Organizational Context

The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) is part of the UN Secretariat, specifically the Judicial Support and Cooperation Section (JSCS). This section supports national, regional, and international courts in investigating and prosecuting serious international crimes in Syria. The Information Analyst Intern will provide analytical support to the JSCS through open-source research and data analysis.

Job Purpose

The Information Analyst Intern will provide crucial analytical support to the Judicial Support and Cooperation Section (JSCS) of the IIIM. This role involves conducting open-source research, monitoring, data processing, and contextual analysis to aid in the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes committed in Syria. The intern will contribute to the Mechanism's efforts to support national jurisdictions by collecting and assessing information relevant to case development. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to develop analytical and data management skills while gaining firsthand experience with a UN international accountability mechanism and its cooperation with diverse national jurisdictions.

Responsibilities

The Information Analyst Intern will support ongoing criminal investigations by conducting contextual open-source searches, monitoring specific open sources for updates relevant to active domestic investigations, and assisting in the analysis of material and records. This includes reviewing records, locations, and background information, and preparing timelines. The intern will also be responsible for weekly open-source monitoring of political and judicial developments relevant to the JSCS, reporting findings, and performing data entry and metadata support for collected information. Additionally, the role involves assisting with informal translations and summarizing Arabic-language materials and taking minutes during internal and cross-sectional meetings.

Work Experience

Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Knowledge of criminal accountability in the Middle East context is desirable. Proficiency in standard software applications like MS Word, Outlook, and Teams is required. Experience interacting with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds is also desirable.
