Research Assistant (Temporary)
Organizational Context
This position is within the Laboratory and Scientific Services (LSS) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna. The Research Assistant will report to the Scientific Affairs Officer (Forensic Early Warning) and operate under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Drugs, Laboratory and Scientific Services Branch (DLSSB).
Job Purpose
The Research Assistant will support the UNODC's efforts in combating illicit synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances. The role involves researching, compiling, and analyzing technical data, managing databases and web portals, and assisting in the preparation of reports and informational materials. This position contributes to the UNODC's mission by providing essential data and analysis for policy development, information sharing, and decision-making in drug control and crime prevention efforts.
Responsibilities
Key duties include researching and compiling information on illicit synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances, and entering this data into relevant databases and web portals. The role involves assisting in the evaluation of chemical data for accuracy and validity, and monitoring developments in assigned subject areas by collecting and analyzing materials from various sources. Responsibilities also extend to user administration and content management for the Early Warning Advisory web portal, and preparing reports, presentations, and other informational content. Additional tasks include performing related administrative duties, providing guidance to junior staff, and assisting with data visualizations and updating web content.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in data collection, analysis, and research within fields such as drug control, chemicals, or crime prevention is required. This requirement is reduced to three years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Experience with content management systems, databases, and MS Excel is desirable.
