Organizational Context

UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, promotes socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It serves as the UN system's focal point for urbanization and human settlement matters. The Regional Programme Division supports regional and country-level implementation, enhancing technical cooperation and programme delivery through initiatives like the Urban Lab.

Job Purpose

This role provides critical normative and technical expertise on territorial and urban planning, finance, and economy, focusing on their integration with climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. The expert will support the Urban Lab and UN-Habitat's Country Offices, contributing to the development and implementation of climate-resilient urban development projects. The position aims to enhance access to expertise, financing, and capacity building, particularly for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States, aligning with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.

Responsibilities

Provide normative and technical expertise on urban planning, finance, and economy, specifically concerning climate change adaptation and mitigation. Develop and deliver climate and environment-related projects, including formulating proposals and engaging with vertical funds. Conduct research on sustainable and climate-resilient urban development and infrastructure. Support participatory processes, workshops, and capacity-building sessions. Develop normative materials and publications. Monitor and report on environmental, social, and project risks. Contribute to progress reports and ensure effective communication and dissemination of project results and technical work across global, regional, and local platforms.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of relevant work experience in urban and territorial planning or climate change is required. Experience in climate-resilient urban and territorial planning, and urban water resilience is essential. Experience within the United Nations System or a similar organization is desirable.
