UNCTAD Internship in the Division on International Trade and Commodities

Organizational Context

This internship is with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva, specifically within the Sustainable Ocean and Blue Economy Programme. This programme focuses on analytical and capacity-building activities to help developing countries utilize ocean economy opportunities sustainably, build resilience, and address climate change.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this internship is to provide students and recent graduates with practical experience in the field of international trade, sustainable development, and ocean economy. The intern will support the Sustainable Ocean and Blue Economy Programme by conducting economic, legal, and political analysis, preparing communication materials, and assisting with event organization. This role contributes to UNCTAD's mandate of supporting developing countries in leveraging ocean resources for sustainable development while addressing climate change challenges, enhancing their capacity and resilience.

Responsibilities

The intern will conduct economic, legal, and political analysis related to the oceans economy, trade, fisheries, aquaculture, tourism, and climate change, particularly in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Responsibilities include preparing briefing notes, speeches, presentations, and communication materials. The intern will also support event preparations for the Sustainable Ocean and Blue Economy Programme, attend and report on intergovernmental meetings (e.g., UN INC Plastic, WTO fisheries), and assist in organizing forums and trainings. Additionally, the role involves compiling and analyzing data for technical cooperation projects and fundraising, and supporting the development of training materials on trade and environmental issues.

Work Experience

No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to the internship's focus is necessary. Applicants must meet the educational criteria of being enrolled in or having completed a relevant university degree program.
